What to Look for in a Senior Living Community

Apr 29, 2025 | The Copeland Experience

If you’re searching for a senior community or independent living arrangement or if you need assisted living for either yourself or a loved one, it can be difficult to choose. How do you find the best amenities in senior living? What should you look for in a retirement community?

There are some important categories to consider when selecting the right senior living arrangement for you or a family member.

Levels of Care in Senior Living

The first question to consider when looking for retirement living options: what level of care do I need? Most retirement communities offer either independent living, assisted living or both.

While many people look for care that applies to their current needs, it can be beneficial to consider what we call the continuum of care. When a senior living community offers a range of care levels, it gives you the assurance that if your needs change, you can remain there and get the support you need.

Copeland Oaks, a retirement community in Northeast Ohio, offers independent living in one-story homes, independent apartment living and assisted living.  Our assisted living facility also offers memory care for those dealing with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. As a resident at Copeland Oaks, you can change your living arrangements to meet changing health needs.

Active Senior Lifestyles

For most people, an active lifestyle, engaging activities and a variety of social opportunities keep life fun! When looking for a place to spend your golden years, you want to find a community. Then you can choose from a busy calendar of activities, connect with other seniors and nurture your mind, body and spirit.

Look for fitness options, music and entertainment, religious activities, community events and more.

At Copeland Oaks, our residents often find they have a busier calendar than ever before. Our 250-acre campus offers a lake, walking trails, fishing, biking, fitness room and indoor pool (with the opportunities for group exercise programs), a library, chapel and Bible studies, community events and celebrations as well as groups to explore a variety of hobbies. All of our residents even get a lifetime membership to Berlin Lake Golf Club, giving them access to a beautiful 9-hole golf course.

We’ve found that our residents all bring new passions and personality to the community – and many of them discover new interests after they arrive!

Dining Options

One of the best amenities in a senior living community is access to restaurant quality dining options. Being freed from the necessity to cook every day can be a blessing for many seniors. But you don’t want your meal options to be limited or less than delicious.

At Copeland Oaks, we offer different dining options. For those in independent living, kitchens allow you to enjoy cooking – but on your own terms. If you don’t feel like cooking a meal, we have dining options on our campus, all of which provide delicious meals and a wide variety of options.

You’ll find our friendly dining staff takes extra care and gives you the service you’d expect from a fine restaurant. Our large menu, which includes meals and snacks, appeals to a wide range of palates. If you have special dietary needs, our menus are created to provide choices for you that give you the taste and the nutrition you need.

Our Lakeview Terrace offers casual dining, with made-to-order sandwiches, pizza, homemade desserts and hand-dipped ice cream. It’s the perfect place to have coffee with friends and family.

The Bistro is a short walking distance from all living options on campus, featuring homemade soups, custom salads and gourmet sandwiches.

Accessible Medical Care

Accessible medical care can make a huge difference for seniors, so you’ll want to explore what retirement communities have to offer. Not having to go off-site to see medical professionals for routine care such as podiatry, urgent care, dental, optometry and more can be an important convenience.
