Mike and Libby Patterson made Alliance, Ohio their home many years ago. Mike is the former editor of The Alliance Review, and the couple has been active in the Alliance community for decades.
Deciding it was time to move out of their old farmhouse, they sought a senior living situation where they could stay active and enjoy more maintenance-free living. They didn’t have to look far.
Copeland Oaks in nearby Sebring was the perfect retirement campus. Full of beautiful scenery and places to walk their dog, the location offered so much in the way of community and connection.
The Pattersons visited many different senior communities, but Copeland Oaks felt right from the start. Now, fully settled in as Copeland Oaks residents, the Pattersons are still involved in the Alliance community while finding new interests on campus.
Maintenance-Free Living at Copeland Oaks
From their single-story home on Copeland Oaks’ campus, in what is known as the Villas, the Pattersons appreciate the peaceful neighborhood and the exercise options such as the wellness center and the walking path around the lake. They enjoy relaxing on their front porch, where Mike often works on his laptop.
The Villas are a neighborhood of ranch-style homes varying in size from 900 to 1,800 square feet, with attached garages, a full heated basement and landscaped yard. This senior living option offers a manageable home in a neighborhood with other seniors. It’s a good blend of independence with support when needed. And the Villas are walking distance from all the campus amenities.
In addition to the Villas, Copeland Oaks offers assisted living, memory care and apartment living. You can choose the senior living option that fits your needs – and move to another option if those needs change.
Active Lifestyle
Mike and Libby volunteer with many local organizations, such as Kiwanis, the Alliance Community Pantry and the Alliance Historical Society. In addition, Mike handles social media for their church. The Pattersons were named the 2025 Citizens of the Year in Alliance, recognized for their volunteer work.
Now they have the benefits of a full retirement campus plus proximity to a lifetime of connections in Alliance.
On campus, the couple has been able to expand their involvement. At Copeland Oaks, Libby is part of the Adventures in Learning committee. This is just one of many campus organizations that residents can choose to join. From groups that focus on hobbies to spiritual-related activities, Copeland Oaks makes sure no one ever needs to feel bored or alone! The on-campus activity calendar is full year-round, giving residents an ongoing array of events.
Retirement Campus Amenities
At Copeland Oaks, the Pattersons enjoy attending lectures and musical performances and meeting new people. Through their church, the couple already knew people living on campus, and they’ve extended their group of friends since moving to their new home.
In addition to all the amenities they enjoy, the Pattersons rest easy knowing they have on-campus medical care available through Crandall Medical Center if needed.
Making Retirement Living Affordable
The Pattersons were pleasantly surprised to discover that retirement living at Copeland Oaks doesn’t come with the high entry fees often required by other communities. With just a $1,100 deposit, they found peace of mind knowing they could enjoy a vibrant, welcoming community without a large financial burden. At Copeland Oaks, affordability goes hand-in-hand with comfort, quality care, and a lifestyle full of opportunities.
